10 Tips for Starting & Sticking to Your 2018 Workout Goals
1. DON’T HESITATE, DIVE IN!
Starting is the hardest part, so instead of wasting the energy thinking about starting, or how to start, just go for it. Get off the couch and do jumping jacks while you watch TV; walk the long way to the store; start moving and before you know it, you’ll start forming new fitness habits!
2. FIND MOVEMENT YOU ENJOY
If you can make working out fun, you’ll want to keep going. Dancing, cycling, walking, running, lifting, CrossFit and swimming are all great options. Find an activity that you enjoy, and the challenges will be easier to overcome!
3. FIND A COMMUNITY
It can be one friend to start, but surrounding yourself with people who have similar goals will make it more fun and keep you accountable. If you prefer working out alone, try finding someone that you can share your goals with and who might check in on your progress!
4. ALWAYS WARM UP
You want your warm ups to be active - save the static (holding) stretching for after your workouts. Think of your muscles as rubber bands that have been sitting in the cold - if you pull at them, they will break. So warm up those muscles!
5. BIG MUSCLES BEFORE SMALL MUSCLES
Make sure you do exercises that involve your bigger muscles, and bigger muscle groups before small muscles. For example, you want to start with squats, which work almost all muscles in the body, before you focus on a bicep curl.
6. GET GOOD GEAR
When you feel like you look your best, you will perform your best, so get gear you’ll want to wear. You’ll be more motivated to work out and have more confidence in the gym. Look out for clothing that’s technically engineered. I love Universal Standard’s collection because not only does it come in a variety of styles & colors, it’s made from fabrics that are sweat-wicking and antimicrobial. It’s the ultimate in comfort meets style.
7. SMART SOCIALIZING
Planning your social life around the new goals you are trying to accomplish, and choosing active things to do with your friends is a great way to stay healthy. Go ice skating or bowling with your friends rather than sitting at the movies.
8. PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
Two tips for the price of one here! Progress takes time, so take your fitness goals one step at a time, and don’t expect to be running a marathon one week after you’ve started, or you will set yourself up for failure. At the same time, be sure to let mistakes go, and allow yourself to bounce back!
9. KEEP IT MOVING
It may surprise you, but the best medicine for sore muscles is more movement! It’s normal to feel sore and achy after a workout, especially if the activity is new for you. Make sure to stretch and give your body time to recover. A good night's sleep will help with that!
10. IT’S OK TO BE SELFISH
Make time for yourself! Don’t let other commitments and guilt become excuses not to work out. You have to be able to take care of yourself to take care of others!
