“Plus size” is not a body type, but for far too long clothing brands have treated plus size women as a monolith, creating denim that covers, rather than fits. The fact is, plus size shoppers account for over 65% of American women, with a litany of body shapes and sizes. Finding jeans that fit beautifully shouldn’t feel like a puzzle, but often plus size shoppers are left with the same exhausting trial and error; waistbands that gap, thighs that pull, and rises that sit wrong no matter how many pairs you try.

Body Type Fit Guide: Which Universal Standard Jean Is Right for You?

Not all denim is built the same, and that’s intentional. Different body shapes require different construction — different rises, different seat shaping, different levels of stretch. The three silhouettes below cover the most common fit challenges plus size women see in their denim and the Universal Standard style that addresses each.

How to Use This Guide

  1. Identify where your body carries the most weight or curves - this could be your midsection, hips, thighs or seat.

  2. Match your shape to the corresponding recommendation below.

  3. Use the fit tip under each style to determine your best starting size.

  4. Order and wear your jeans for at least a few days — denim breaks in.

Apple Body Type: a ‘90s straight leg with perfect stretch

Apple shapes carry weight higher on the body — at the midsection, bust, or torso — with a narrower seat and hips relative to the waist. This is one of the most common body types and one of the most underserved by conventional denim construction.

The problem most apple-shaped women encounter: jeans sized for the waist leave excess fabric at the seat. Jeans sized for the hips dig in or ride down at the waist. So, your perfect jeans have a waistband that fits comfortably without sagging in the hips or thighs.

Pear Body Type: The wide-leg jeans with flexible movement 

Pear shapes typically have narrower shoulders and waist with fuller hips, thighs and seat. The classic pear fit challenge comes in two forms: jeans sized to fit the hip gap dramatically at the back waistband, or jeans sized to fit the waist leave no room through the seat and thighs. The result is usually a split decision – choose between comfort at the hips or a waist that actually fits.

The Carrie Wide Leg Jeans resolves these fit woes with a graduated fit that accommodates fuller hips without adding excess fabric at the waist. The waistband also has encased elastic at the back for a fit that eases while you move, and cinches when you need it. The high-rise waistband accentuates your waist, while the wide leg cut creates a streamlined silhouette. Hourglass Body Type: A mid-rise cut with perfect proportions

Hourglass figures have balanced shoulders and hips with a defined waist – usually a greater than 10” waist-to-hip difference. Your challenge is finding jeans that honor your natural proportions without adding bulk or hiding your waistline.The most common complaint from hourglass-shaped shoppers: jeans that fit at the hip gap in the waist, or jeans that fit comfortably at the waist are too tight through the leg and seat. 

The Donna Straight Leg is built to honor the waist-to-hip ratio that defines this shape. Denim Stretch Explained: What the Fabric Actually Does

Stretch is one of the most misunderstood specifications in denim. The percentage of spandex tells only part of the story — the weave, the construction, and the quality of the fabric recovery all determine how a jean actually performs.

Here’s what to know:

Low stretch (1–2% spandex): Approaches traditional rigid denim. Provides maximum structure and shape retention — the jean holds its line throughout the day and doesn’t lose its silhouette over time. Best for straight-leg styles like the Etta, where clean, defined lines are the point. Less give at the waist and hips makes accurate sizing more important.

Medium stretch (2–3% spandex): The sweet spot for most shoppers. Enough give to accommodate curves and movement, but the fabric recovers rather than going slack. Several washes of the Donna are built in this range – flexible enough to feel comfortable all day, structured enough to maintain their shape.

High stretch (3–5% spandex): Maximum give, often comfortable from the first wear. The Seine Skinny is built in this range, with stretch that moves in every direction without pulling or bunching. This is what allows the Seine to fit through the thigh without restricting movement.

A note on “too stretchy”: Some shoppers avoid high-stretch denim because of experience with styles that go limp after a few wears, losing elasticity and unable to recover. This is primarily a quality issue, not a stretch issue. Well-constructed stretch denim uses fibers and finishing processes that maintain recovery over time.
