If I were to hem it myself it would be too short. A little distressing is fine but I'm 61 and I don't want to be seen as mutton dressed as lamb. "I love almost everything about these jeans. The fit is perfect. I am 5'5". With a sneaker I get a bit of a casual break in the leg or a dressier straight fall with a heel. I have an 8" waist to hip ratio and the fit in the waist is perfect. I am a size 14 in most brands, and between 12 and 14 at US. I'm glad I took the website and review advice and ordered the 12. The fabric is substantial and the stretch makes it very comfortable. The only downside is the strong chemical smell, I assume from a mold and insect retardant. I have washed them twice, sprayed with alcohol and hung outside in sun for two days an it is only now starting to fade."
